Why haven't nikon or canon made their own camera phone?
It seems like a great product idea and i know a ton of people who would buy it. I think the reason alot of people don't get into photography is because their big fancy cameras seem intimidating. I feel as if it was on a phone itd be easier to learn and eventually the user would want to upgrade to an actual nikon or canon.
Added (1). Sorry i actually meant a mainstream phone such as a galaxy or an htc android to feature a high tech camera from either of those manufacturers
Because they are stupis AF
Nikon and Canon are photo equipment manufacturers, not phone manufacturers. However, your idea does have some merit, and it has been often suggested that they do get into camera phones to some degree.
The best Idea is to have something like the "Intel Inside" that PCs have. In other words, design a camera phone module that they would sell to a 3rd party phone company. Then they could market "Nikon Inside" or "Canon Inside" without having to enter the phone market.
Nikon has already made an Android tablet style compact camera (with everything but the phone function), but it is not very popular. Nikon should rightly stay in the camera business where they excel rather than trying to branch out into the phone business. This is also true for Canon and Pentax, but possibly not so much Sony. At any rate, collaboration with a phone maker would draw from each company's strengths with a better product in the end.
Apple of course would not bite, but perhaps some of the Android market might. This would give brand recognition to first-time camera owners for the jump to the next level.
Afterall, the entry-level compact camera market is just about dead due to smart phones, and to make the brand connection to the next level, jumping from a "Nikon Inside" smart phone to a DSLR would seem a logical path.
I do not see why Canon/Nikon/Sony/Pentax have not already done so. The camera companies are going to have to become innovative to survive the next 10 years.
Cell phones with cameras are a whole different market
I'm really surprised that Canon and Nikon still makes P&S except that those cameras are the money makers which allows Nikon and Canon to keep the prices down on their dSLR cameras. They are also the test bed for new sensor technology, most recently the BSI-CMOS sensors.
Nikon does have one crossover P&S camera, the Nikon Coolpix S5200 which has built-in Wi-Fi & iOS/Android App Support.
When companies like blackberry are struggling, this is really not a good time for camera companies to jump into the fray.
