Nikon SLR Cameras

Which Pro Canon DSLR would you buy? Canon 7D, 5D (mk.) or 1D (mk.) and why?

I'm interested in knowing what features people look for in Pro Canon gear.

State a model and tell me why you would have it… If you've already got a Pro Canon DSLR, would you upgrade to a different one if you had the money? Or stay with what you've already got?

I'm so sorry if you've got a Nikon or other brand camera… But this ones for the Canon users. Feel free to argue why Nikons are better though…

I have the 5D MkII and have previously had the 1Ds. My 1Ds was the first generation and had some really awkward user interface issues. It was also big and heavy as a large brick. I used it, however, due to it being the only digital SLR at the time with a 35mm film size sensor. The full frame sensor is the number one reason I have the 5D. If I had the choice, no, I would not rather have the newest 1Ds Mark III. I simply do not need that much build strength, or size, or weight. As photo quality is concerned, the 5D does the same thing. The 7D, (or any DSLR that is not "full frame"), is not even a consideration for me. Smaller sensor, smaller pixel size, lower quality, and the crop factor of the lenses is aggravating to me, especially after spending half my life having it ingrained in my head what certain focal lengths look like through a 35mm camera viewfinder.

Without question I would buy the Canon 5D Mark II.

Bigger sensor, bigger viewfinder, great low light sensitivity and less image noise.

To this day I have no idea why people put up with APS-C cameras.

It depends on how much money I have… At this point, I don't have a professional body, so anything would be an upgrade to me.

If I was rich, I would obviously buy the most expensive canon (I'm assuming that's the 5D Mark whatever).

If I was not rich, then I would probably buy what I could comfortably afford. After all, it's the photographer (not the camera) that is important.

Are you some sort of marketing executive trying to get our opinion, or are you a novice photographer trying to decide what camera to get? If the latter, I don't think you are ready for pro body if you have to ask such a basic question. For you, any old consumer SLR will do (nikon or canon, doesn't matter. They are both good brands).

Things I look for in a camera are:
1. Max buffer speed/max burst rate (the higher the better, but I don't need anything more than 25 frames. Anything more is just icing on the cake for me)

2. High-speed flash sync capability (my current pro-sumer camera has this; you don't need a pro camera for that)

3. PC terminal (though if I was rich it would be less of an issue as I would just use an off-camera hot-shoe cord). My current pro-sumer camera also has this, which I use with my handlemount flash.

4. Ability to use AA batteries via an accessory grip/battery pack (in case I can't recharge my Li-ion batteries).

5. Tough, weather-resistant build quality (not a fan of cheap flimsy plastic)

6. Spot metering capabilities

7.interchangeable screens (I prefer the ground glass/split screen more than the modern clear autofocus ones)
