I suggest you get what your friends have so you can have someone to ask if you have questions or doubts about your camera's features, functions, and all. I'm a Canon user so I prefer having Canon.

I would like to give an opinion based on the features.

Canon IXUS 220 HS:

Shoots higher resolution Full HD (1080p) video but at a lower frame rate (@ 24fps)
Has Image stabilization Lens; Helps eliminate blur caused by small camera movements
Gives Wider aperture f/2.7
Much better macro capability (shoot as close as 3 cm)
Has a CMOS sensor CMOS-family sensors often produce better quality images
Shoots faster (3.4 fps) at continuous shooting mode.
Allows longer exposures till 15sec

Nikon S3100:

Much lighter and thinner than Canon IXUS 220 HS
Less costlier than Canon IXUS 220 HS
Shoots video at a resolution 720p but at a higher frame rate (@ 30fps)
Do not have image stabilization
Gives less wider aperture f/3.2
Lesser macro capability (shoot from 10 cm onwards)
Has a CCD sensor CCD-family sensors doesn't get heated up when used continuously (specially while shooting videos)
Shoots much slower (0.7 fps) at continuous shooting mode.
Long exposure limited to only 4 sec

Canon IXUS 220 seems to be a better model than the Nikon one!
