Which Nikon DSLR to get?

I'm looking into getting my boyfriend a dslr for christmas. However, I shoot with canon and he seems to like nikon. Which is fine, nikon is great too, but my knowledge about them is limited. I think he would fair best with something that compares to the XSi to T2i. I would prefer to get something with a kit lens, just because it's more affordable, as my budget is limited to around 600$.

I believe the new D3100 Nikon came out with like a month ago is in that price range. Its still somewhat an entry level camera like the XSi yet it can shoot 1080p HD video.

The Nikon D3100 is a little better than the 550D (T2i) because it not only can shoot Full HD video, it can do so with the lens in autofocus. The canon can't

For 600$ I recommend;
- Canon EOS XS - XSi - T1i
- Nikon D3000 - D3100 - D5000
