Neither is significantly better than the other.
Either is capable of professional results.

Go to a camera store, try out several models from both companies, and pick the one that feels best to you.

Whichever one YOU like better.

Anyone that says one brand is better than the other is a fool. Both are excellent brands and you will be fine with either system. At the pro level there are minor differences that make you pick one over the other depending on how and what you shoot.

I have owned both over time.
I prefer the lens quality of Nikon over Canon in general.
I only want to use Apochromatic lenses when available in the focal length.

Canon has a whopping advantage for new technology interface do to all the other technology companies that they have under that same brand. This lets them lead in many ways of research and development.

Canon can produce their best quality lenses for a lower price, and they have a greater diversity of them.

I don't think you will ever be unhappy with either.

Pentax.

just kidding.

They are practically neck-and-neck in the industry. You'll get photographers from both camps trash talking the other. Choose the brand with the layout and ergonomics you prefer.

Different people prefer different features. Personally I prefer Sony, but that's probably because I'm a bit of a techie (look at these forums and you'll find most Sony users are techies!).

Get yerself a genyowine Holga! Yipper. Finest plastic lens ever made fer a box camera. When it breaks it makes a perfect paper weight! Just joking

Ahaha. You've touched an age old dispute. Look, in general, Canon lenses have MUCH better colors. But Nikon give you a lot more sharpness. So if you're going to be editing your pictures even slightly, Then go for the Nikon, since you can always tweak the color, but you can't do much with the sharpness without ruining the picture. If you aren't going to edit, then go for the canon since the immediate results from a canon are slightly better than a nikon in terms of the depth of the color.
Also, I seem to prefer the lenses for a nikon. The canon ones are slightly more expensive for absolutely zero benefits.
