Nikon SLR Cameras

Which do you prefer Camera wise?

I'm looking to buy a new camera. I want it to be a nicer model. I have heard good things about Nikon and Canon. Which one is better? Or is there a different brand that's even better? I would like one where the lenses could be switched out.

Canon, Nikon, and Pentax all make interchangeable lens cameras where you view your subject thru the "taking" lens. Canon & Nikon are the preferred brand on this web site. However, Pentax makes a very fine camera (Pentax Kr) which I purchased recently (last year). I have been a life long Canon camera user, but I just got disgusted with all the frames and gobby-goop in the viewfinder. I purchased the Pentax because it has only one focusing frame (but multiply focusing points if you need them). Also the Pentax has the stabilization feature built into the camera body, rather into each lens, which of course makes the lenses more expensive on Canon's & Nikon's.
One point: I purchased the camera w/28-55 zoom. But It is cheaper to buy it or any other camera with the lens that comes with the body AND a 55-200mm lens. This "kit" results in a more economical purchase.

You won't go wrong with Canon or Nikon. I use Nikon and I prefer their professional cameras at this point in time. The Nikon D3100 is a really great camera that should consider. It depends on your budget which specific model of camera. Don't ignore lenses. Really good lenses are very important.

Nikon, Canon, or Pentax will serve you well. They each make excellent entry-level DSLRs with a wide assortment of interchangeable lenses.

I'm not a big fan of Sony, despite the whiz bang tech specs. They've gone in the direction of translucent mirrors that steal 30% if the light that normally is transmitted to the digital sensor. That's 1/3 of a stop that I'm not willing to give up with low-light and sports photography. You might also check out the JD Powers Customer Satisfaction Survey here.

As far as which of the other 3 are better, I'll defer to which one fits your hands and suits your style. Handle models from all 3 that are in your price range. See how the operating menus and controls work for you.

p.s. I'm a Nikon shooter, but that's largely because Nikon's current mid-range and pro-level DSLR's can use every Nikon mount lens I've ever acquired over the last 30+ years. I've grown accustom to their interface and handling. You may choose a different path.
