Which camera would you buy between those two cameras and why?
How is the other better than the other. Pros and Cons of both of them?

It depends on what you are looking for. If I have to choose only between these two cameras, I would go with J1 and invest the remaining price difference on lens. However, if I had another choice, (among micro four thirds), I would get Olympus EPL2 and Panasonic 20mm f1.7 lens which would give you an amazing advantage for available light photography as well.

All my SLR & DSLR have been Nikon & I really like the brand for many years

However I think these two are poor attempts by Nikon in an important area: two problems - the sensor is not really great & they are far too expensive

There's better value with Panasonic (eg GX1) or Olympus or perhaps the new Canon G1X (its not IL but seems good camera)

I wouldn't touch either with a ten-foot pole.

You can read reviews and compare the two cameras. Basically, both of the cameras are great and almost the same in features. I just like the Nikon 1 V1 because of its amazing video feature. Nikon 1 J1 has also a video features but I did not try, I only try V1. I recommend both cameras, just choose what suits your budget. I know Nikon 1 J1 is cheaper than V1.

J1 has a nice poppy uppy flash. But then again with the V1 you get a bit more pro feel. Picture quality will be the same.

But one thing is certain with the V1 being more "pro" i the eyes of Nikon it will get more attention. And it will get firmwares that improve it in many ways. So the V1 + Flash. Is probably the way to go.

But really. Yeah don't make these two your only option! Look at panasonic and olympus they sell Fourth Third system cameras. Nice big sensor.nice quality glass.

I won't recommend you buying this because there are very few options for lenses. Instead have a look at Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2
I got this camera as a supplement to my DSLR for traveling when I don't want to be burdened with my big (BIG) camera bag. I've shot about 100 photos with it, including some challenging situations, and have begun to experiment with RAW images as well as those processed by the internal JPEG engine. So far, so good. The image quality is nice, the low-light performance is strong. The camera, with the kit lens, focuses really fast, and man is it small!
