I'm looking to buy a digital SLR camera, just an entry level camera with HD video recording, so do you think that Nikon or canon would be a better choice

I think Nikon is better but that is my personal choice.

Nikon has better lens coatings right now. Canon has more features for the money, and possibly a better sensor. It depends on the model, but I usually think Canons are a better buy.

Canons are lighter and more plastic (this began with the AE-1). Nikons are possibly more durable, but Canon is good at making stuff last despite being very light. Depending on your preferences, light is good.

Nikon has a much better history of legacy-support. Canon screws you regularly with "new technology."

Fact: You can still mount lenses from the late 80s on Nikons. Lenses from the 60s can be used with some effort in manual focus. Try to do that with a Canon and you'll break something trying.

All-in-all, I'd tell you to go with Nikon based on the legacy issues. If you invest now, you could be using the same lenses for a long time to come without fear of them becoming obsolete. Sure Nikon may come out with a better version, but they'll grandfather your grandfather's lenses.

The best beginner DSLR camera with HD video recording is the Nikon D3100
it features something that no other sub-$1000 Nikon/Canon camera features, and that is Autofocus while shooting video.

Canon and Nikon are on top at Digital SLRs.

Any that can record videos does it in HD and Full HD.
