A few weeks ago i bought the sony a390, but people have been telling me that Sony isn't a great company when it comes to dslr's. I want to know which company is better so i can decide what camera i should get.

The top two power houses for DSLR's are Canon and Nikon.

Personally, I like Nikon cameras. To me, they take better quality pictures and are very user-friendly.
It all depends on your opinion and what you want in a camera.
Canon and Nikon are very well-known for their great DSLR cameras (and they are GREAT), but that doesn't mean they're the only good makers. I've never owned a Sony DSLR, but a friend of mine has one and she loves it.
It really only matters how you feel about your camera. If any of your friends have a Nikon or Canon, you could see how they feel to you and compare them to your Sony, or go to a store and play around with the Canon & Nikon cameras on display. That way you can get a feel for each type of camera and make a better informed decision on which one suits you the best.

Nikon & Canon cover something like 80% of the market. It' not to say your Sony isn't a nice camera. Some Nikon's use Sony technology in them…

Canon and Nikon are the two most recognizable camera brands anywhere in the world right now because of their multi-million advertising campaign. That doesn't mean they are the best. Hasselblad is the industry standard. Before Canon and Nikon started producing digital SLRs, Sony was already producing sensors that eventually would be used for digital cameras.

DSLRs are all basically the same. What I like most about Sony is it's physical appearance. Having used Sony products since my first Walkman, I know Sony takes great pride in the technology underneath that stylish shell. I haven't really used a Sony dSLR yet but the chance of setting my eyes through Zeiss lenses that big is a great temptation to any old timer like me.

All three are very good camera makers. Canon and Nikon are traditional camera makers and know a lot about optics and get tons of feedback from professional photographers. Sony on the other hand knows a lot about electronics and they're making quite some innovations (see their A55 camera for example).

If you want the absolute best down to the last detail and don't mind paying (much) more, get a Nikon. If you want an easy choice, get a Canon. If you want to get some more innovative concepts and save some money, get a Sony.

Canon and Nikon are equal.

I'd say Nikon and Canon would be fairly equal followed by Sony.
