It depends. What level of photographer are you currently? Are you looking at this as a hobby or are you very serious about your photography? Did you previously own any film cameras? While Nikon and Canon do have the most extensive amount of lenses available, you might want to consider looking into Sony. (I can hear the boos from people that think the only decent cameras begin with C or N.) I have shot Nikons, Canons, and Sonys, and frankly the Sonys have given me the most bang for the buck. My photos taken with my $1700 a850 with Zeiss lens were comparable (read pretty close but not as good) as the shots taken with my friend's Nikon that he paid over $7000 for just the body. And you can always tweak the photos in Photoshop or Lightroom later. The downside to the top end Sonys is they do not have live view (which I have never used), they do not allow you to shoot video (if I wanted to shoot video I would buy a video camera), and the ISO gets noisy over 800. Still, I'm very happy with my Sony. And I will tell you what many professional photographers have told me--it is not the camera but the person using it.

Nikon is totally the best in that range. I would avoid Canon personally as i've seen way more returns for canons.
