Where can I sell my 1200$ camera plus the extra lens I paid $300 for?
All of it works in great condition. It's a nikon dx. I went to lawn shops and they only want to give me $50 for All of it. It comes with the bag extra attachments charger EVERYTHING works perfect. Any advice besides eBay and c list?
There's no way to tell without knowing the brand and the model of the camera and the focal length of the $300 lens.
c list would be the easiest since you do not have to deal with shipping and handling, but can get cash for the camera directly from the buyer.
Personally, I do not like Craig's List. If you do try to sell it there and someone wants to come buy it, do NOT allow them to meet you at your home, and do not go to some place where they want to meet. If they will not agree to meet with you in a neutral PUBLIC place, then do not do business with them. Also, do not go alone, have at least one other person with you. I'm not paranoid about life, just realistic. Thugs troll Craig's List just waiting to lure in someone they can easily rob.
I suggest you use Ebay. Take good quality photos of the camera and lens and give a full, detailed description, and see what happens. Start the bidding at the minimum price you are willing to accept. Study Ebay on the same items as yours to see what kind of prices they are bringing. With Ebay, you are not dealing directly with another person, plus you have money protection with Pay Pal.
You can also sell directly to KEH, but you will not get near as much money as you would through Ebay. KEH is wonderful to BUY from, not so much to SELL to.
Craigslist is your best option, I've used it successfully to buy and sell photography equipment. But don't expect to get what you paid for your stuff- doesn't matter how well it works, or its condition, if a person has the choice to get a used camera from a trusted source (i.e., refurbished by the manufacturer or from used equipment retailers like KEH) for what you want to sell it for, they'll choose that source, many of which are offering free shipping for the holidays. Your camera might have cost you $1200 at the time you bought it, but may not be worth that price now (given you haven't included the model of your camera, I can't really say). Retailers are discounting heavily right now for the holiday season, there are deals everywhere and digital technology changes so fast that if you bought your camera 6 months or a year ago, chances are it's now been replaced with a better one for the same price you paid a year ago. People that use craigslist want to pay less, which is good for people who need to sell stuff, but not if they expect to get what they paid for it- won't happen. So look for what you're trying to sell on websites like http://www.keh.com/ compare the conditions listed and the price for their used equipment, then list your equipment below that price.
What you paid for an item is in no way a factor for the person buying your item from you.
Don't expect a reasonable price at a pawn shop. Many of them simply exist to give a bit of cash-in-hand to individuals looking to sell their livelihoods for their next fix, or sadly, to a person down on their luck who is desperate to pay a bill. The shops that are actually reputable are still going to give you insane markdowns -- cheetahs run, birds fly, and pawnshops rip you off.
Ebay is going to be your best bet if you want to get market value for your used equipment. Whatever it sells for is what it is worth. Keep in mind that this is current the market value for USED equipment, your camera has likely depreciated significantly from the price you paid just by being owned. You could also send it to KEH -- they can even give you an online quote, provided you are honest with the condition of the equipment. Expect 50%-65% of the market value of the used equipment.
If you have to stay offline, or you need cash quick, go to a local camera store. Do an internet search for a camera store in your nearest city -- there will be a few. Call them and see if they are interested in used equipment -- they will likely say yes. Expect 40% of the market value of the used equipment. If all else fails, go to another pawn shop, and see what you can get. Do some research and find out what your camera and lens is actually worth -- even if you don't want to sell on ebay, you do want to search ebay for recent ended auctions for your camera's model. If the market value is $800, then you can expect $200. A fair deal at a pawnshop is around 25%, pawnbrokers move items fast while taking significant risk that the item is stolen, broken, or simply won't sell.
