Nikon SLR Cameras

What Nikon DSLR professional camera would be good for sporting events and portraits?

I will be studying Photography in January and I need to buy myself a DSLR camera. I heard that Nikons are very good. I want a camera that is good for sporting events and for portraits of people and just beautiful scenery…

What camera would be good for this.

And what kind of lens should I buy?

Really depends on your price range:
Best Camera: Nikon D3S, extremely expensive though
Best Lens: 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII, I have this lens and love it.

If you are more budget restricted: D700, or D7000 camera are both great.
Still going to recommend the 70-200mm f/2.8, it is expensive as well though

For sporting events you would need a fast zoom lens. For portraits you would probably want the 50mm f1.4 and for scenery you would need a wide or ultra wide lens.

I use both the Nikon D3 and D300 when shooting sports.

However, you do not really need a professional Nikon camera. Any of the Nikon entry level dSLR cameras will do just fine At present, the D3100 may be your best choice in an entry level dSLR

What you need really are fast, long lenses for shooting sports or action photos.

Here is a sample, shot using a Nikon D300 with 300 mm f/2.8 lens @ 3200 ISO

Lenses:

Portrait:

Cropped sensor camera: AF-S 50 mm f/1.4
Full frame camera: AF-S 85 mm or AF-S 105 mm

Sports:

24-70 mm and 70-200 mm lens for court sports (basketball and volllyball).

Field sports:

70-200 mm, 300 mm, 200-400 mm, 400 mm and/or 600 mm

Landscapes (scenery):

10-24 mm, 12-24 mm or 14-24 mm
