I would like your thoughts about a dlsr from the newer models of nikon or canon. Also any recommendations for lens. I'm more into shooting events, street and portraits.

We do not know your budget, however, it does appear that you will be charging for your services

For that reason, you need a digital SLR camera like the Nikon D500, Pentax K-70 or Canon 7D, Mark II

Add a 23=70 mm f/2.8 and 50 mm f/1.8 and you will have the right tools for your services (events and portraits)

When it comes to portraits, you need to include the cost of at least three lights and a background. As your business flourishes, you will probably want to add a full frame camera like the Nikon D850, Pentax K-1 or Canon 5D, Mark IV. With these cameras, you will need to add an 85 mm portrait lens

Any camera body will be able to do the types of shots that you mention. If you were to shoot in low light and hand held, then the best bodies will be full-frame with not too many pixels. Thus making the Canon 5Ds R a bad choice vs say the 5D Mark iii/iv which has fewer but larger pixels.

The best lenses for your type of work would be something like the 24-70 f/2.8L IS and the 70-200 f/2.8L IS. Those two lenses would be your main workhorse lenses along with say a 35mm f/1.4.

Kit lens. With events, you'll need a strong flash too. Although you can already shoot portraits with the kit lens, you may want to blur background more easily so aim for a prime lens with a low f/number (50mm or 85mm with f/1.8 or f/1.4).
