What lenses are compatible with a Nikon F-301?
Are there lenses specific to that camera or are most Nikon lenses okay to use? I'm new to photography!
It takes lenses in Nikon AI or AIS fit - virtually any manual focus Nikon fit lens (not only Nikon, but a whole range of third-party manufacturers made them, and the used market is full of them). There are a couple of older lenses it can't take, but these are collector's pieces anyway, and very expensive.
Jessops, a local dealer or the back pages of magazines like, 'Amateur Photographer,' can all point you in the direction of used kit.
Don't buy from eBay without 100% positive feedback and the option to return, but these lenses are much simpler than AF ones, so tend to be safer to buy.
Manual here (it's a US website, so the manual is for the N2000, but only the name is different);

Nikon lenses can be categorised into the following classes:
1) Pre-AI (these lenses are not marked as such).
2) AI, AI-S and AI modified
3) AI-P
4) AF (and AF-D and AF-N)
5) AF-S/AF-I (with aperture ring)
6) G-Type (these are all AF-S)
The Nikon F-301 is a camera that is made to the AI-S standard. This means the lens is connected to the camera by purely mechanical means. Lenses in class 2, 3, 4, and 5 are compatible as they have both an aperture ring, and a AI coupling ridge. Please also note, class 6 lenses are all marked AF-S too, so be VERY careful looking for the G marking and avoid these lenses.
Lenses such as the AI modified lenses will not have any markings which indicate it's AI readiness. Most sellers will let you know it has been modified, and by visual inspection of the lens mount for the AI coupling ridge you can confirm this.
Best fit would be the Als. It was sold as the N2000 here. I bought one new in 86. The first 35mm to have a built-in motor drive. Nice little camera. Still have mine.
