What lenses are compatible with a Nikon D5200?
Just curious
All Nikon AF-S lenses if you want auto focusing.
All Nikon AF lenses is you don't mind manually focusing them.
This is a simple enough, and good question but the answer, if answered completely is rather complicated.
Here is the lens compatibility chart. It's not so much that some Nikon lenses are not compatible as much as HOW compatible some are and which are the MOST compatible.

The short answer is that AF-S lenses are the most compatible, that is, they allow use of the most features of both the lens and of the body. However, you can use all metal, hand-assembled, rare earth element glass AI lenses from the 1970's perfectly well if you don't mind manual focusing with no built-in light meter. For things like macro or landscape photography, auto focus and metering are really not necessary anyway and by buying AI lenses, you are both saving money and buying a better-built lens that will last longer.
Then there are all the choices of lenses in between.
My point is that, you should really study the linked compatibility chart each time you want to buy a lens and see what version is best for your specific purpose rather than simply buying AF-S lenses for each job.
