What is the refund policy with Nikon?

So I bought a nikon digital camera at best buy less than a month ago, and last week i took it on a camping trip with me and i realized that the lens wasn't opening correctly, so I assumed that I can just return it once I get back on my trip. I thought the return policy at best buy was 30 days, but apparently its only 14 days for cameras. So, What am i supposed to do? Contact Nikon? Return with Nikon? I'e had it for more than 14 days, but less than a month. I really don't know what to do!

Yes contact Nikon. But if they find out it was pilot error it's on your dime to fix it.

Return policies are taken up with the store not Nikon.

Best Buy's not my first choice of places to shop. You're sadly right, they have a 14 day return policy, but you can check with Nikon about servicing, if the camera was defective. You can contact Nikon and send it in, or take it to a Service Station, if there's one near you.

Here's a link that lists all the US Nikon Authorized Service Centers.

I'm confused… People return things and get a refund because they are not satisfied with it (or they are dishonest and buy it to use just for a holiday/vacation/camping trip and then return it). And that is something you should be able to tell within 14 days.

If there's a quality defect with the camera, it comes with a one year warranty. It would seem that "the lens wasn't opening correctly" would be a defect and therefore a warranty issue (unless of course, the lens was damaged from "mishandling" on your part).

You can call Nikon at 1-800-NIKON-UX ( 1-800-645-6689) and see what they can do for you… But if they think that it is something that was caused by "mishandling", they will not do much to help unless you pay for the repairs (and then you will have your camera back in working order).

The refund policy is different to the warranty:
The camera store's refund policy says that if, within 14 days, you decide you don't like the product, or change your mind about buying it then return it in good condition with all the original packing and get a refund.
Unfortunately some dishonest folk have used this as free 2 weeks rental for their holiday photos so many stores do not offer this on photo equipment.

The warranty is issued by the manufacturer - usually 12 months. If a defect becomes apparent in the 12 months then they will repair or replace provided it is a manufacturing. You are covered by this provided it has not been bust because you dropped it.

There's yet another option which is product insurance. You pay extra for for this and gives you cover for accidental damage.
