What is ''cashback'' and how does it work? - 1

I'm planning to purchase a Nikon camera, and on the website of the shop I want to buy it from it says you get £35 when you buy it. What is cashback and how does it work? Will I simply get £35 back when I buy the camera? Or will it be for example a £35 gift voucher to the shop i bought the camera from?

At supermarkets, you have the option to get cash back when you pay by card. It means they can give you some cash from the till at the expense of the same amount from your account. So it's like using the till as a cash point. The term cash "back" is wrong, they're not giving anything back to you, they're giving you your own money. I'm not sure what it means if you're buying something online.

With Nikon cashback, they send you a pre-paid Visa credit card with that amount of money to spend on it. You can spend it anywhere that you can use a Visa card.

If you don't spend it within 6 months they will start taking money from in at a rate of about £5 a month in "charges", but that shouldn't be a problem.
