What is best digital camera brand?

I would like to get a nikon or Canon. If you can suggest other brands please go on.

Main features I want:
500$ of price

Go to a store and grab a camera of either manufacturer, choose whatever you like best. There's not much of a difference between those two brands.

I like and purchased a Pentax DSLR, but the latest model is the Pentax Kr, priced at $583.00 at B&H Photo in New York and I assume other places see below. I like the cleaner viewfinder and the fact that the camera body has built in stabilization, so you don't have to pay for this feature with each lens you purchase.

I would not let the $83 additional prevent you from getting a great camera!

Hasselblad or Leica.

Obviously, $500 will not get you the best so with your budget, you can get a very nice Sony Cybershot or two.
