Nikon is really good.

No. Nikon and Canon tend to be the most highly regarded cameras, but may cost a bit more. If you are wanting to do photography professionally you should go with one of these two brands, but if it's just for fun and Olympus has better prices, buy one of those.

I have had several Olympus over the years and my friends always say my pics come out better when we're all having the same shot taken with all our cameras. I just bought the Nikon coolpix s8100 and I love the zoom and some of the other functions but overall my olympus took the best pics. My friend dropped it and the lens got smashed in so I bought the Nikon. I never go for the cheapest Olympus but something mid range that fits in my purse.

There's no "best" camera brand per se (otherwise, there wouldn't be so much competition).

The best camera is the one that feels natural in YOUR hands, with controls that you can operate proficiently in order to obtain the best results from the camera.

For example, I have seen better photos from a person who builds his own pinhole cameras, than I have from someone who doesn't know how to properly use a DSLR.

For point and shoots there are many very good brands to choose from including: Panasonic, Canon, Fuji, Sony, Nikon, and Olympus. Stay away from GE, Sanyo, Vivitar and bankrupt Kodak.

There's no single best one. Most make very good cameras. IN the amateur market you get a nice camera from almost any reputable manufacturer. Nikon makes the D3100 which is a great camera for the money.
