So I purchased the Nikon D3300 and it will arive tomorrow so I was wondering if I need to buy a better editing software than what the camera comes with. And do you think I need a better editing software

I use Picasa, but try out the Nikon software for yourself first, and decide if you need anything better.

Picasa and the Gimp are both free downloads, and you can go all the way up to the very expensive (and IMO overrated) Adobe Photoshop, so there's something for everyone out there.

Adobe Photoshop Elements has most of the features of the full Photoshop and is much less expensive.

Gimp is probably the best free one.
Irfranview is a very easy to use free one for basic picture editing.
Only work on copies of your photo files. 72dpi x 800pixels wide is OK for on screen use. 300dpi and say 1800 pixels wide is good for standard prints.

Nikon's ViewNX 2 is a basic editor that will perform quite well. It performs many useful actions such as brightness control, white balance to deal with light temperature, color boosting, sharpness, contrast, brightness, highlight and shadow protection, works with you D-Lighting, can boost color, crop, straighten, rotate the photos. As well as esoterics like Axial Color Aberration and Auto Lateral Color Aberration. So you see, you can do and learn a lot from ViewNX 2.

If you want special effects, like removing objects from the photo, then you will want another editor. Many Nikon owners get along just fine with ViewNX2.

I suggest you use ViewNX 2 for a while and see if you need anything else.

Sure, you can do some basic photo retouching with the software that comes with your camera, but really for the cost of what a single meal at a fast food restaurant and one cup of Starbucks coffee a month, you can have a subscription to Adobe Lightroom CC and Photoshop CC (under $11 a month)

You have an amazing camera for its cost and when shooting in RAW, there's no better program for editing (sorting) and processing RAW image files than Adobe Lightroom CC

Nikon has ViewNX2 which is an OK editor. It's slow and clunky, but gets the job done. Lightroom is a nice editor which allows you to do exposure adjustments, get rid of lens distortion issues, and has a nice catalog function.

You should get Adobe Lightroom which is the industry standard for photo editing along with Photoshop. Both are $9.99 per month from adobe.com. The only Nikon software that I would use is their NEF to DNG converter.

Editing software? None.

In photography, you aim to get it right in-camera.

Learn take pictures properly with your new camera and then you won't need editing software.

GIMP 2.8 is free. A book to teach you how to use it will cost you $30.
Look on youtube for some videos on GIMP.
