The D3100 is the latest in your line-up. Heard good things about it.

An additional note: these are all SLRs. They're quite capable. However, a novice can be overwhelmed by their complexity. It's all too easy to change a setting when you don't know what you're doing, with the result being lousy pictures. Not knowing how to undo that mistake might make you think that there's something wrong with your camera, when it's actually fine. If you have the determination and patience to learn your camera by reading the manual and experimenting, then you'll be fine. If not, either get a point-and-shoot or figure out how to put your camera on full auto (which basically makes it a more expensive point-and-shoot) when you accidentally change a setting.

You should think about a high quality compact camera, such as the Cannon G11 or Samsung TL500. One would cost only bit less than these.
The quality will be the same as from an SLR, will far more portable and unobtrusive for a teen.

An SLR gives you a lot more flexibility, option to add many lens's, and other non-image quality advantages, at a cost of weight and size.

If between these, the 3100 for sure.
