What brand is better? NIKON or SONY?

I have a sony cybershot but yet nikon has been around since 1917

Sony by far LOL they have a better backround too even though nikon was made in 1917

Sony NEX system need more scrutiny. Its mirrorles camera.look around on youtube about its capability to shoot 10 frames per second and HD video recording. This 10Fps can only be found on 7000 dollars pro dslr. So its very good at catching up focus with your kids speed.

Nikon is a best camera.

Not sure about the Nikon point and shoots, but their DSLRs use Sony made sensors. As for 10 frames per second, that sounds impressive but so does a car that will run 150 mph. Of course you may never need or run it at that speed, meaning the top speed means nothing. My old camera shot 3 fps and my newer one 4 fps, but even 3 fps was never too slow for my needs. I've used a Sony NEX, nice camera to be sure. The mirrorless design makes it physically smaller, but for my large hands, that was a disadvantage.

Nikon didn't make their first camera until 1948, and even then, it was a knockoff of something the Germans did better (Leica shutter in a Contax body).

While their SLRs and DSLRs are good, their point-and-shoot cameras are either over-priced or junk. Anything is better than the dreadful Coolpix L-series.

But Sony has been making digital sensors ahead of everybody else…

Cybershots are better built and easier to use than Coolpixes. Cybershots come with the most features too in a point-and-shoot camera.

With dSLR's, all brands are basically the same.

Nikon, based on market share in the DSLRs. Most professionals that I know use Nikon or Canon. Sony aren't bad at making cameras, and for compacts they manufacture some of the best. But I think at the top end of the DSLR it has to be Nikon and Canon, they have the best performers.
