Been checking out cameras in and around the £200 mark as i would like the next step up from your bog standard camera but not wanting a dslr i have been checking out the sony cybershot hx9v and have played about in the shop the zoom seems really good and has different settings i can play about with anyone had any experience with this model? It gets great reviews and seems very quick in taking pictures compared to nikon, canon models that i tried in the shop

I don't know what 'bog' is but I'm using up all my willpower to resist buying that very camera.
You've got the Sony HX9V and the Fuji F550EXR/F600EXR… Those seem to be the 2 best cameras that can fit in your pocket and cost less than or close to $300(which is 200lb to you)
I've had Nikon and Canon point and shoot cameras, I currently have a Fuji and my next will probably be that Sony… And in my experience, the Fuji is much better than the Canon and Nikon were.
When lenses are not a factor(ie DSLR) and you're bold, you really can sometimes get a better camera going outside Nikon/Canon.

Cybershots are very easy to use. They won't fail to give you decent shots consistently as long as you always remember to give them enough light.

I'm in love with Sony DSCH70B Cyber-shot Digital Still Camera. It does everything so well. For instance with a 10X zoom you would expect it to be unusable except with a tripod. But with the anti-shake software, shots have startling sharpness. In "easy" mode it will determine you are shooting faces which are back lit and turn on the flash. And if automatic is to blasé for you you can have fully manual on aperture or exposure. Big screen, easy controls, many modes, auto everything, easy for idiots and flexible for button twiddlers. And cheaper than the rest. Downside? A little on the fat side compared with the Panasonic. I found a beautiful leather carry case for my belt on Amazon France.
