Rewind problems with Nikon N4004?

I have a Nikon N4004. I used a roll of film with 24 exposures. When I used up all the exposures, I hit the rewind button. I can hear the camera rewinding, but the film itself does not rewind. I left to to rewind for at least 5 minutes. I finally stopped it and saw that the film did not roll in at all. Any suggestions of what my be wrong?

Added (1). Yes, I'm aware that it would expose all the film and ruin it. But I had no choice but to open it as it was taking a rather long time. As I opened it, I discovered that the film had not moved at all.

How do you know the film did not rewind? Did you open the door? If you did under any amount of light, the film would've been ruined if it indeed wasn't rewound.

It should take just around 10 seconds or even much less to rewind film. It could be done in that short time manually even. If all the film went into the take-up spool, the film wasn't anchored/taped properly to the spool in the canister or the film got torn somewhere in between.
