Is the Nikon N4004 a good camera for taking pictures?
A friend gave this camera to me but its like really old and it still takes film. I'm use digital cameras but right now I don't have one, so I'm trying to get use to it. I'm going to Las Vegas and wanted to take some nice pictures with my camera Especially since my phone memory is low.
Use 600 film stock or higher you will be surprised.
Of course it's a good camera for taking pictures.
That's what it was made to do!
Practice taking pix and have them processed before you go anywhere
to make sure you get usable results.
Like any SLR, the quality of the images can't be affected by the quality of the camera itself. Since there's nothing besides air between the rear element of the lens and the film, the quality that you get will be determined by the lens and your decisions on such things as settings and composition.
That said, the N4004 was the absolutely worst auto-focusing SLR that Nikon had ever produced. Since the N4004 was at the bottom of Nikon's line, it lacked a lot of features and capabilities that were found in the N6006 and N8008, both of which were hugely more popular than the N4004. It's AF system was slow and not very accurate for the time, and it had an overall poor design. But, since you got it for free, who really cares? At the time of its introduction, Nikon had the N6006, N8008, and the N90. If you had either one of these cameras, that would be a much better SLR to use. Mainly because the N4004 was designed for someone who only wanted to shoot in full auto because they didn't know anything about photography, but they wanted better image quality than what you could get out of a P&S.
One thing is for certain, you must get the owner's manual for it and read it through! There are some things specific to the N4004 that will prevent it from working correctly to the point where you may think that it's broken when it really isn't.
It's a good camera but you'll have to take lots of film rolls with you and you'll have to find a place to bring them in for developing.
