Did you buy a Nikon battery or a battery made by someone else? Nikon puts software into their cameras preventing them from working properly when a non-Nikon battery is detected.
No other brand does this kind of garbage to their customers. Thank you Nikon.

If your battery is made by Nikon, then it's broken and can't be repaired for less than its replacement cost. Take it to an e-Waste recycling center and get a new camera. On average, all cameras (even Canon and NIkons) like this last about 3-5 years.

Some bridge cameras won't fire up/turn on if the lens cap hasn't been taken off the lens.

Sometimes wiping the battery contacts on your camera can sort out the kind of problem you're mentioning, the actual battery contacts are worth cleaning too (don't use metal to scrape any build up or residue from a battery) batteries can be and are dangerous if you don't follow manufacturers guidelines and recommendations.

What happened to the old battery?

I have Nikon Li-ion batteries I have been using successfully since I purchased my D200 in 2006 nearly ten years ago.

The key to keeping Li-ion batteries working that long, you need to do two things.

* NEVER let a fully discharged battery sit longer than about 72 hours. The longer the battery remains discharged, the better the chance is that battery will fail before it should
* ONLY use Nikon battery chargers. Why? Because Nikon battery chargers monitor the way that the battery charges so that it does not overhear or overcharge.

The cost difference between a genuine Nikon battery and a generic is not worth the possible grief. Think of the added cost as insurance.

Have the camera, battery and charger checked at the service center.
