With compacts, Canon is better. If you want Nikon dSLR quality in a compact, try Sony.

I would like to believe most of the camera now a days have color swap option but you might want to check it first. In compact cameras between canon and nikon I would prefer canon. But in genreral both produces good cameras so youd probably be happy with anyone of these manufacturers.
