Nikon lens error with clicking sound?

I got my camera last christmas and have never had a problem with it until now. I've never dropped it and i always keep it in its case. When i turn it on it works fine and then when i start to zoom in it'll go to a certain point and stop retract back in and say lens error. I turned it on earlier tonight and noticed a mechanical clicking sound.
anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it?

Since it's under warranty contact Nikon. Apparently something has broken in the lens mechanism.
