Nikon F4 metering issues?

My F4 refuses to fire in averaging or matrix metered mode. Any suggestions? I ran a roll through all on spot and works fine. Thanks.
Added (1). edit: with an AF-D Lens. I tried reading the manual, but to no avail.

Are you using manual-focus lenses? Matrix metering doesn't work with those, it also only allows aperture priority and manual metering with such lenses.
Your first step should be your manual.

Have Nikon look at it.

I still have one of my Nikon F4s cameras, but I always use the center weighted metering mode (since I first owned a Nikon F2). I have always found that using the center weighted metering mode provides the best overall exposures. I do use the spot meter mode when shooting with extreme wide angle lenses and I really never use the Matrix mode.
Call it old school if you like, but over the 35 years of shooting film and needing to nail all my exposures, I learned quickly how to use the center weighted metering mode.
As the saying goes. "It is isn't broken, do NOT fix it"
