The issue with spending less is that often you don't get the quality as well as sometimes, reduced functionality.
Some aftermarket (no name) flashes look cheap because they are and do not work with all of the features on your camera.

My suggestion, save up and buy the Nikon sb900.It will serve you for years and won't break down like some of the cheaper brands.

My 2 cents worth.

I have a Nikon D90 and bought a SB700, which works great. It's about $325 or so at most on-line stores, and while a bit less powerful than a SB900, it does the job.

I had considered the SB900, which was within the budget, and had a difficult time in deciding between the two. What led me to the SB700 is the SB900's bulk, as my camera bag is already too full, and I like to travel light. The SB900 is significantly larger.

While the SB900 is more powerful, the SB700 is adequate for me. And if you find the SB700 is not quite powerful enough, you can always detach it and use the remote control system on the D90 to wirelessly fire the flash. That way you can put the flash closer to the subject if it is not powerful enough.

But at any rate the tradeoff between the SB700 is price, size, and weight vs. The SB900's power.

The SB700 also has a very similar control panel, but it lacks a couple of features the SB900 has that you may or may not ever use such as multi-flash - which can create a strobe like effect.

The SB700's Guide number at ISO200 is 128 while the SB900's Guide number is 157. This means that with your camera set at ISO200, the maximum distance the SB700 can reach is 128ft, while the SB900 is 157ft.

Of course this is in ideal conditions, and in real world conditions the maximum range you will see will probably be less, but it gives you an idea of the differences in power output between the two.

To sum it up, the SB700 is about 30% cheaper, and about 20% less powerful. So you have a choice between two pretty good flash units, it just depends on your budget and needs.
