For mirco.both lenses above aren't suitable. For portraits birds i think 70-300 will do.family photo use your 18-55?

For birds 300mm is already a bit short, 200 is way too short.

I have a 55-250 and take the occasional bird shots. 250 is barely long enough for small birds 20 meters away without some pretty serious cropping!
Personally I wouldn't want a Tamron lens! But of the 2 the 70-300.

The two lenses are not quite intended for the same purpose.

the 18-200mm lens is intended to be an all around (sometimes called walk around) lens, having both wide angle and moderate zoom.

The 70-300 is intended as a telephoto zoom only.

Many birders prefer 400-500mm lenses.

Neither lens is a macro lens, but you could take portraits with either.

An inexpensive macro lens might be the Nikon 40mm micro. I have this lens as well as a 100mm macro lens, and each has it's advantages.

I think you would be better off specializing in a lens for macro and one for birds. If you get into macro - which is a whole new and exciting world - and if you get into it significantly, you may end up buying a dedicated macro lens as well as a close up flash.

Another alternative is to look for a 60mm micro, as it will be in the low end of a good range for macro and portraiture.

These two lenses serves two different purposes.these are not comparable to each other.
18-200 is for wide angle photos, we call these types as wide lenses. 70-300s are called tele lenses, these are used to capture photos from distance.

To decide between these two lenses, you should check out he photos you have taken so far.

if you find that you love to shoot family photos and closer shots, you should go for wide lense.you'll get a bit zoom also. In most cases, we need to take wide shots and sometimes a little zoom also helps. All most 70% shots are supposed to be covered by this sorts of lenses. This is why these are called all around lenses. By they way, most of of these all around lenses creat lense veginette, many photographers do not like this effect.

But if you love to shoot from distance, you should go for Tele. This is good for Bird and animal photography, also in street photography. Tele lenses are also good close portraites but again you need to shoot from distance.

read the reviews and comparision online before you decide.

The problem that no one has addressed her is that Tamron doesn't make very good lenses. I have the 18-200 and it has focus and aberration issues. I read a writeup yesterday that someone bought the 18-250 and is as disappointed with it (brand new) as I'm with mine.

These are not good lenses, I'd stay away. Buy the lenses from your camera maker, Canon or Nikon.
You'll be much happier. Yes they're more expensive but there are reasons for that… The glass and
the build among them.

Nikon 55-200VR - nikon 55-300VR - tamron 70-300VC or nikon 70-300VR

all NOT for macro, good for portraits, probably too short for birds

First Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 SP Di VC USD XLD is a big lens. It will take up space in your camera bag. However, you will want it to take up that space because it is so sharp that you'll end up relying on it for a good number of shots. The Vibration Control is the most surprising thing about this lens. Press the shutter release halfway and you'll see the viewfinder just lock in rock steady. It's really amazing.
