The 50mm f1.8G is good for indoor available light pictures but likely too long of a focal length for groups unless its a small group or you're in a large room. On a 35mm film camera or full-frame DSLR a 50mm lens is considered a "normal" focal length because it approximates the angle of view of the human eye. A focal length of 85mm to 105mm is considered an ideal portrait focal length on a 35mm film camera or full-frame DSLR. On a Nikon DSLR like the D3100 or D5100 or D7000 you have to consider the 1.5x "crop factor" which causes the 50mm lens to have the angle of view of an 80mm lens on a 35mm film camera or full-frame DSLR. This makes the 50mm lens a good choice for portraits on a cropped sensor DSLR but less suitable for group pictures.

The Nikkor 35mm f1.8G would be a better choice for indoor groups although with the 1.5x "crop factor" it will have the angle of view of a 52.2mm lens on a 35mm film camera or full-frame DSLR. So it would be considered a "normal" lens on a cropped sensor DSLR.

If you plan on shooting a lot of indoor group pictures you might want to consider the Nikkor 10-24mm f3.5-4.5G and an external flash unit.

Yes, it's fine for indoor shots, but you may need to stand further away if it's a large group, to get them all in. For practical reasons, you may be better using something a bit more wide angle for group shots - particularly if your camera is not a full frame camera - because then your 50mm will effectively be an 75mm.
