CAMERA Help! Nikon af-s nikkor 18-55mm 1 3.5-5.6g?

I'm new to photography and i need help. Whenever i try to take a pic of something my camera all it does is focus but it doesn't take the pic

First of all, do you have a formatted memory card in your camera? Unlike some point & shoots, a dslr requires an external memory card to capture any images.
Secondly, your camera may be set so that it will ONLY take a picture if you have achieved perfect focus. If it is too dark, or you are too close to your subject, the camera can't focus and won't take a picture.
