AF-S NIKKOR 55-200mm VR Image Stabilization Lens?
I have found this for sale at a good price with the kit-D3100, What would this lens be used for? Also for events, parties, weddings what would be the best lens for me to buy, the cheapest possible option as I have only just bought the kit so the great lenses will have to come at a later date!
This lens is suitable for some portraiture, basic sports and wildlife. It is too long and too slow to be an ideal lens for events, parties and weddings. I wouldn't choose the D3100 for this range either: not if you are planning to offer quality services… Well, maybe for parties and some events, but it isn't really up to the wedding scene at a professional level.
As to lenses that would be appropriate, I suggest a 35mm f2.8 or faster and a 50mm f1.8 or faster. Later a medium telephoto could be added. Any zoom capable of the low-light levels you are going to be dealing with is going to cost 3 to 5 times as much as the camera, but a couple of fast prime lenses will serve you much better, cost much less, and make up for some of the inadequacies of the camera - I'm not suggesting the camera is a poor one. It is in fact very good. But it is a consumer model, never intended to serve as a professional tool in the difficult conditions presented by dim interiors, mixed lighting and other "impossible" lighting conditions.
