Is the nikon j1 waterproof?

Can you take it snorkelling? No.
Will it die if it gets caught in a rain shower? Unlikely.

No it's not weather sealed. It's also lacking in accessories, and has a smaller sensor than all other compact "system" cameras. If you really want a camera of this type look at Sony's NEX, Micro 4/3's, Canon's GX1, and Fujifilm's X-series they all make better sense than Nikon's J1! All compact system cameras are a bit of nonsense really, but Nikon's J1 is the worst of the bunch!
Try before you buy (or most likely not).
