Is Portus Digital safe?
I've found my dream camera at a price I can afford (I'm 14 and I've spent so long saving up I don't want to lose my money!) It's on 'Portus Digital' ( http://portusdigital-px.rtrk.co.uk/nikon-d5100-dslr-camera-18-55mm-vr-lens.html ) I'm asking anyone who has ever ordered from there, so please don't tell me it's safe if you haven't even heard of them.
I've looked online but I can't find any personal opinions, so, has any one ever ordered online from Portus Digital? If so, did you receive your order?
Reseller ratings has nothing on this siteā¦ I'd say stay away. If you find a price that's too good to be true it usually is and all they really want is your credit card number.
I'd stay away.
The site looks OK and the reviews are all positive. If you pay by credit card, you will be covered by them anyway, if something does go wrong.
The only other thing I'd say is it's a pity you didn't chose a Canon.
If in doubt, don't.
The best way to buy a camera, especially if it's a dSLR is to get one at a reputable store, face to face with an authorized distributor even if the price is considerably higher. Peace of mind has a high price and it's all well worth it.
You're buying a Nikon. This makes it doubly more important to buy within your area so that in case you need the camera serviced, you won't have problems shipping out your camera to an off-shore site.
Major retailers I trust (Newegg, Amazon, B&H, Adorama) all list a basic D5100 kit for just under $600. If "Portus" lists it for lower, it is too good to be true.
There seem to be some shady sites-and a ton of unknown ones-that use the rtrk.co.uk domain. You probably aren't finding any opinions of the site because it is likely a "fly by night" operation that just popped up within the past week (and will disappear just as quickly).
You did very well to ask around before jumping on what looked like a good deal.
Actually, i want to buy the exact same camera. I saw their sponsored ad when i was looking at it in amazon. I was a little dubious like you and still am to be fair so let us know what you decide. Their contact address is just a house so could be a small business? Let me know how it goes with these guys.
Here is the report from scamvoid
http://www.scamvoid.com/check/portusdigital-px.rtrk.co.uk
What is of interest is the individual ratings:
Trustworthiness 63 Good
Vendor Reliability 58 Unsatisfactory
Privacy 58 Unsatisfactory
Child Safety 52 Unsatisfactory
The fact that vendor reliability and privacy both are unsatisfactory are warning bells though not in the alarm category. As such, it is probably better to not shop there unless you can find someone who can give you a definitive answer
I was dubious so I picked my camera up from there office and all was fine.
