Having used both brands of cameras and lens for over 50 years, I don't think there's much differences between them when it comes to the final product they produce. On the technology front, Canon is more cautious and slow on rolling out their innovative products. Backside illuminated sensors that are in Sony cameras for over 3 to 4 years that give it a greater dynamic range according to DXO is still not in the 5D MK4. Nikon buys sensors from Sony so their 810 and soon to appear 850 model have higher dynamic range. The final product these cameras produced and the ergonomic/user friendly interface are the best in the world. There isn't much debate between these brands as far as I'm concern.

I prefer Nikon… It's a subjective matter.

Both are excellent brands. Go to a camera shop and hold them. See what feels most comfortable in your hand and how convenient the controls are.

There's no Canon-Nikon war, as far as I'm concerned.

There's however, a battle between those who are highly opinionated, and like to waste energy over debating which brand is best. (I'm not referring to you, OP).

I get along quite well with my friends who shoot Canon. I like their work, admire their white lenses, and gush over what their cameras can do.

But mostly, I just look at their work.
And they do the same with mine.

Canon makes some great cameras. So do most other manufacturers.

I currently shoot Nikon, Olympus, and Panasonic. Given 200k disposable income, I'd probably invest in a few different camera systems, and use them all.

Having shot with Pentax for more than 30 years, I just let the children squabble.

If you want body-mounted anti-shake, the ability to shoot with legacy lenses, weather-sealing, and a pentaprism viewfinder, you'll get them cheaper (if at all) with Pentax.

If you want a badge, look at Canon and Nikon.

Pentax, Canon, Nikon…
They all make superb cameras that are capable of taking superb pictures.
They all have a loyal brand following.
Like BMW, Audi and Mercedes it is all down to personal choice in the end.

Neither is necessarily "better".

One or the other may be preferable for an individual user.
