I have a Nikon FG and the black part behind where the film goes cracked. Is it a lost cause?

Added (1). The picture I linked shows where the crack is. Thanks

Added (2). Nope it didn't look like shutters. Just plain plastic or something

Added (3). Hey George,

Thanks for getting back to me. It takes pictures normally still, I just don't know if the pictures will turn out?

I'd say I think it is. But check if it still takes pictures and take the film to be developed and see what they say, if you're going to a specialist shop for cameras to develop your film, ask there and the guy might be able to assist you better when he sees it.

Does that part look like shutters (like for your windows?) if so then most likely it will not work… That is where it opens up and allows light (the picture) to come in and hit the film. With it not working properly, you may get no light, too much light or any variation… I accidentally broke that part of my camera, and didn't even bother sending it in to get fixed, the cost of getting fixed ($300+) was more than finding it used online ($250… )

Looks like you've cracked the shutter. The shutter actually is a series of thin metal or plastic panels that overlap.

There's only one way to find out. Simply load in a roll of film and take some photos. If the shutter is damaged, you won't be able to take any pictures.

As for repair, the cost to repair the shutter on a Nikon FG would be more than it would cost to replace the camera. You can get a fairly nice Nikon 35mm slr on Craigslist for under $70, easily.

Take it to your local camera store. Odds are the staff there will know if it will still work, or if it can be fixed. They won't charge you for taking a look.

That looks like an illustration from an owner's manual (it does not look like your actual camera).

If you are talking about the camera back (the door that closes over the film), then the film will be exposed because light will come in through the crack and none of your pictures will come out (unless you try to duct tape it or something).
