You are asking for opinions and you probably do not want a bunch of strangers to spend your money for you.

* spend some time on the Nikon and Canon website and look at the entry level cameras made by those companies.
* visit the DP Review website and compare the cameras features
* visit DXOmark to see how their sensors compare.
* visit a proper camera shop and hold both in your hands

That said, you can't go wrong with either companies dSLR cameras.

I have a Nikon and I do really like it.
I'm not sure what is supposed to be better about Canon's, but I believe they are a little pricier (If that matters to you.)

Nikon and Canon are both excellent camera makers, you can't go wrong with either one.
