Recommend lens for shooting landscapes please? - 1
I have a nikon d3100, a 18-55 mm nikkor vr lens and a 55-300 nikkor vr lens… I'm looking for a lens (I think wide angle) that will allow me to take better landscape shots that have some "drama" ( I shoot a lot of seascapes and wide open spaces)… I'm on a budget of course, and a novice. So I need advice. Some people have mentioned tokina wide angle lenses to me, what do you think? And is vr important with wide angle lenses, or is tripod use assumed?
I'd appreciate some recommendations.
Well you can buy lens all day long till your heart is content. I have always used 24 mm to 28mm for 35 mm Camera and 127 mm for Large Format Camera for my landscape pictures.
Sounds like you're looking to buy toys. You really don't need any more lens than what you already have. Your D3100 is a great camera, and you've got a good kit (assortment of lenses) there too.
VR is better suited for telephoto lenses, but it's handy to use on your 18-55 lens. A tripod is assumed, but really not essential if you're taking pictures in the middle of the day. VR is good
Tripods are great for making (notice I did not say "taking") photos in the later evening, or early mornings, or of making water appear blurred. With a tripod is how I made this photo
Also, your camera really doesn't matter. The more lenses and stuff you own, the more that stuff gets in the way of you getting really good photos. One National Geographic photographer I read about used to use a 35mm and a 50mm lens. No zooms. Also, see http://www.kenrockwell.com/...camera.htm
So a lens that I would recommend for you shooting landscapes? The 18-55 you own.
Cheers, and I hope this helps!
