How to use interval timer on my Nikon V1?

I got a new Nikon V1 camera and I've been trying to use the interval timer. Every time I try and select it, It's always in grey and says, "This menu/menu item is not available at current settings/ under current conditions." I haven't had the camera long enough to drastically change anything, so why can't I access it? Or what must I change to access it. I'm currently working on a time lapse project.

The most likely reason you can't access the Interval Timer is because you are in Auto (Scene) Shooting mode. You will need to set your camera to shoot in either…
P (Programmed Auto)… Use this until you learn about the other modes
S (Shutter Priority)
A (Aperture Priority)
M (Manual)
Read about the above exposure modes in your Reference Manual (starting on page 111). Also read pages 173-176… It shows a Table that lists which settings can be adjusted in each mode.

I have a V1. You need to be out of auto mode.
Auto mode disables most advanced functions on most cameras, including this one.
Auto = simple.
