Interval timer for Nikon D3000?

I can't find an interval timer for my Nikon D3000 - i currently have to tether it to my laptop and do it via software - but that is very tedious when travelling!

Your camera does not have an interval timer. Worse, you do not have a connector for a cable release for an aftermarket interval timer either.
But all is not lost.
You can buy an aftermarket battery grip that has an interval timer. The battery grip includes a trigger, that basically uses the camera's infrared remote shutter release so you don't need a cable.
I think the interval timer only does 99 shots though.
It isn't cheap, the battery grip costs $100.

How well it works or how reliable it is, I can't say. But you can read the reviews at Amazon. Perhaps you can find a similar product made by another brand.
