How to make the background blurry in pictures?

Emma

I've already tried putting the aperture setting on the smallest it can go which is F/3.3…
It has a macro setting aswell as quite a few others? Any suggestions?

I'm using a Nikon TZ30 by the way! (whoo christmas presents! )

F/3 should be making the background in your photos out of focus. Try zooming in on your images in a editing program and you will notice the blur a bit better. It may not be as blurred as you would like though. What is your lenses focal leingth? Try getting closer to your subject if you are standing far away from them and don't stand them too close to a wall or background. Another option option besides small aperture for a more blurred look would be to select the background in a editing program and use a blur filter (though this tends to look fake). You may want to look into purchasing a dslr with a 1.8 or 1.4 lens. That will give you the look you are looking for. Telephotos also create a nice blurred background when zoomed in even at f/4. I know its not what you want but for comparison: To have the background in focus your going to have to be at about f/12 or higher anything below that will be a little blurry.

By the way I looked up the Nikon TZ30 and there's no such thing. You may want to look at the camera model again and fix that.

Zoom out to your longer focal lengths, telephoto
Wider apertures
Keep the subject closer to camera
Have a deeper space behind subject

I think the TZ30 is a Panasonic camera. A good camera.
