How to first charge my new dslr battery?

I just got my new nikon 7000. Now out of the box should I charge my battery before starting taking pic? Or should I drain out the battery and then charge it?

Don't drain it. Draining hurts teh battery more than anything else.

Typically I like to charge it overnight. After that; charge it whenever I want to; before I need it. If i need to store it for a long period of time around 70% charge ideal.

Personal Rant:
battery technology has gone a very long way. The draining thing might have been a good idea in the 90's with those cellphone brick batteries… But now they are much more useable and adaptive.

It should all be in the manual. Read it first, and it should have a quickstart guide. USUALLY you have to charge a battery for 5+ hours before first use for electronic devices.

It is always a good practice to fully charge your battery before you start using your camera. This will prolong the battery life and also will avoid you missing a shot just because you ran out of power.

The very first thing you should do is read your Manual. Go to pages 21-22… First Steps… Charge the Battery.

It says that you should charge the battery before use. This may take up to 2 hours and 35 minutes to charge (if the battery is fully drained). The charge lamp blinks while it's charging and stops blinking when it's fully charged.

While you're waiting for it to charge, you can read through the rest of the manual…

Charge it overnight. Don't rush. Just wake up at your normal waking time, eat your breakfast, don't forget your milk, take a bath and brush your teeth. That should do it.

You've got an expensive Nikon D7000 but don't know how to read the manual… Sigh… I despair…
