Wide angle lens for d700?

I'm ordering a SPL Housing tonight, but need a good wide angle lens also. It would be for my nikon d700. I'm going to shoot waves crashing and surfers. I think the 14-24mm would be to heavy. I will spend about $1000 any suggestions?

Try either the 24 mm or 20 mm wide angle lens. As you know, underwater, you get a magnification of about 1/3rd more, so what is really wide above the waves, is going to be a more moderate wide angle shot

I think there are two factors; with a case you hardly handle your camera, so focus won't be as easy and a wide angle is a good option. But in other hand for taking surfer photos with a 20 mm lens, you need to be on the board.
