Which Nikon SLR is better?

Which Nikon is better?
1. Nikon D5000
2. Nikon D300

D300

Have you held each in your hands?
The D300 is the professional APS-C camera and can use all Nikkor lenses AI (manual focus) and all auto-focus lenses made by Nikon. The D300 has a magnesium body with sealing against dust and moistures.
The D5000 is an entry level APS-C camera and can use only AF-S lenses in the auto-focus mode and can use AF lenses in the manual focus mode. The D5000 has a space age plastic body, but no seals against dust and moisture.

Spec-wise, D300. Cost-wise, D5000. Basically they're the same. It's just a matter or getting features you can't live without.

Which car is better?
1. Audi S5
2. Toyota Camry
I wonder…

D300

For a photography starter with limited budget, the D5000 should be a smarter choice. You don't buy a Mercedes to learn driving.
Better? Just compare the cost especially that they are of the same brand. No one will pay a price for a Mercedes and drive a Toyota.

D300 is better, but that also depends on what you shoot. If it sports, then it's much better, but if you're like most other people that shoot normal stuff (family, places etc.) then the D5000 or D90 will be great!
Here's a post called 'Buying a DSLR, what's important, megapixels, features, brand, price, quality and which one to get - http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2009/03/which-dslr-to-buy.html

Go with Nikon D300 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera
-Amazing high-iso performance (low noise)
-TONS of the controls that you'd use are on the camera body (rather than having to dig around in menus) such as metering, exposure (obviously) flash, AF area, AF mode, bracketing, etc
