If referring to a camera, would be titles the "d1x" Nikon DX is actually a type of sensor to lens system. I. E. A Nikon 55-200mm lens, VR or not, will say "DX on it. These lenses work well with almost all the cameras that Nikon makes currently. The main difference is some lenses that are more pro grade are called FX lenses. These lenses are specifically designed for the FX bodies, such as a D700. What's the difference and why dose it matter? The FX bodies have a "full frame sensor" What this means is that the sensor inside the camera is roughly the same size of a full piece of 35mm film, hence the name full frame. Other cameras such as D3100, or D5100 carry what's called a crop sensor. These sensors are physically to the full frame. How this all makes an impact is how much the lens projects onto the sensor. The FX lens will project a lot more surface area covering the whole full frame sensor, while a DX lens only covers enough for a crop sensor camera. Problem starts when people try to take a DX lens and put it on a full frame body and the lens can't cast the picture broad enough to cover the entire sensor area of the full frame sensor. The newer cameras compensate for this by using only half the sensor, meaning if your shooting a DX lens on your full frame D700 with a 12mp sensor, the camera will auto cut that to a 6 MP from your 12. This will literally degrade your camera ability to take photos. Sorry i went a little off topic but i felt more explanation was required. Were to find a Nikon D1X, you can't buy these new anymore, they are discontinues, so hit Craigslist and e-bay.
