Amazing how the spammers come out of the woodwork, heh? Lol

Remembering that your D700 is an FX (full-size sensor) camera, I'd avoid the many excellent DX lenses out there. If your camera is a D7000, then we have a different discussion.

Look at the excellent Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 AF-D VR as your first choice. Though it's pretty expensive ($1700), it's still the lens of choice for many professionals. For a bit less, look at the Nikon 80-200mm AF-D f/2.8, Nikon 85mm f/1.8, Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8, or the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8.

Notice the pattern? A "faster" lens with f/2.8, f/1.8, or f/1.4 will allow you to have shallower depth of field and better bokeh for portraits. On a budget, you could look at the 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4, as that's a great all-purpose lens.

Hope this is more helpful than that dratted third and fourth link spam garbage.

As a general rule, focal lengths between 70mm and 105mm are considered "idea" for portraits. That is a rule based on the 35mm film format. Now, the question is, are you talking about the D700 or the D7000? I ask because generally speaking, anyone with the skill and knowledge to use a D700 would already know this and have an ideal lens in mind. The D7000 however, is a 1.5x (APS-C) crop-body and the focal lengths you might use extend down to 50mm. You could still use the longer focal lengths common among full-frame cameras and film cameras but, you will have to increase your working distance from your subject or else you may find some focal lengths too "long."

Having said all this, if you're really looking for portrait lens suggestions for the D700, consider the following Nikkor (Nikon) lenses:
24-70mm f/2.8
70-200mm f/2.8
85mm f/1.4
105mm f/2
