The only notable difference between the two is the addition of video capability in the D300s. They are otherwise nearly identical. You can save a bit of money by choosing the original D300 or even the current D7000 which in some ways, is better than the D300s. You can see a side-by-side comparison at the Digital Photography Review website here: http://www.dpreview.com/...ikon_d7000

The D300s is basically a re-release of the D300, with added video feature.

if you don't need weather sealing, look at the D7000, which sports a more powerful sensor and upgraded technology at a smaller cost

Video and not much else. The sensor for both cameras are 12 megapixels. The new D7000 from Nikon has a much better, newer Sony image sensor and performs much better for less money. The D300 is over 4 years old and the S version had only a very tiny improvement in image quality at high ISO. They both use the same Sony image sensor found in the 4+ year old Sony A700 dSLR.

bottom line, it's old. Unless you are getting a killer deal on one ( a lot less than a new D7000) skip it.

D300s has video, has 7 vs 6fps, and dual card slots. Quality, sensor and all is the same.
