I have a caasio exilim, these are some pictures from it.

would it be worth it for me too;
get a Sony Nex 3?
Get a canon rebel xs?
get a nikon d300?

These photos are pretty nice. The only reason you want / need a dslr is for the manual control.

I own a Rebel XS and many of my photos here are from this camera. I also own a t1i, it's also excellent and I have many photos posted with it as well. It's the control that makes a dslr camera worth what it is.

Forget Sony they don't stand behind their products as well as the rest. I would add the Pentax Kx. I just purchased this camera about Christmas time. I judge a camera by how easy it is to hold and sight though. I found the Pentax very easy to do these things. Although I love Canon their multiple focusing points drive me nuts. The Pentax has their stabilization feature built in to the camera body, so you are not paying for this feature with each lens you purchase! Check many places for prices! I got mine for about $529.00.

Interesting, your style of shooting doesn't tell me if you actually need a DSLR.
you mentioned the nex 3, you can now find the nex 5 for about the same price, it has a better grip which in itself is a point worth considering.
this might be a good choice for you, seems that you take your shots as they happen, this might fit the purpose.
the downside is that the lenses are expensive.

I would stay away from the D3000, the handling (menu and buttons) is a bit behind from the competition, the ISO setting is menu based and the focusing has a mind of its own (tried different D3000, D3100 and D5000, they all have the same problem).

Canon entry level SLR are pretty neat and handling is very good, they are compact as well, feature packed and within budget.

I would not consider an entry level Sony DSLR as they are a bit behind feature wise (no video for exemple), this might sound weird as I use a A200 on a daily basis!

NickP said to stay away from Sony as they don't follow their cameras… Untrue, they are actually curently renewing ranges and releasing ground breaking products.
Sony is just about (well in October) to release what might be the best thing that happened camera technology in years. NickP also has 45 years of experience as a professional photographer, yet he only got a K-x, nothing wrong about it, it is actually a very good cam that I wouldalso recommend if you needed a DSLR, it is just that this is NOT a professional level camera which would make me reconsider is advises. Well I will stop the fanboy talks, I use Sony but love Nikon (D90 up) Pentax, canon…

Hope this help
